Sticky Drawers & Swollen Doors?

How Moisture or Summer Humidity Can Sneak Up on Your Cabinets (And What You Can Do About It)

Well, it’s that time of year again. The sun’s been peeking through more often, the sandals are out, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably opened a drawer or two lately and noticed it’s just a little… stickier than usual. It’s not your imagination.

This time of year, when moisture or humidity levels rise, your kitchen and bathroom cabinets can really start to feel it. And while we’re lucky here on the Island to avoid the worst of the summer heatwaves, moisture and humidity still find their way into our homes. For those of you in other parts of the country, this can be a much bigger situation.

Wood is a natural material, it expands and contracts with changes in temperature and moisture. So, when the air gets heavy with humidity, your cabinet doors may swell, your drawers may drag, and over time, those small seasonal shifts can lead to long-term wear and tear.

Even well-installed cabinets can suffer if moisture control isn’t part of the picture.

3 Quick DIY Fixes to Help Keep Your Cabinets Happy All Year Long

1. Use a Dehumidifier or Ventilation Fan

Especially in bathrooms, laundry rooms, or closed-off kitchens, running a dehumidifier or even just your bathroom fan more regularly can make a world of difference. Proper airflow helps keep moisture in check and protects cabinets, flooring, and even drywall from long-term damage.

2. Wipe Down Water & Steam Spots Immediately

It sounds simple, but water left on cabinet surfaces, especially around the sink or stove, can get absorbed faster than you think. Wipe down damp doors or areas after doing dishes or boiling a big pot of pasta. A quick towel dry goes a long way.

3. Keep Cabinet Doors Slightly Open Overnight (Sometimes)

If you’ve had a particularly steamy day of cooking, or you’ve just finished a hot shower, propping doors or drawers open just a crack overnight allows things to air out. It’s not something you have to do every day, but on those really humid days, or steamy showers, it can prevent minor swelling or soft-close hinges from sticking.

At the end of the day, a little bit of care can go a long way. Whether you’ve got refaced cabinets, original wood doors, or a whole new set on the wishlist, humidity plays a role. And if you’re ever unsure whether what you’re seeing is seasonal or structural, don’t hesitate to give your local pro a call. It’s what we’re here for. And if you’re not on the Island, these few tips can still help you keep things running smooth no matter the forecast.
